Aorto-femoral Bypass Surgery/Graft

 Aorto-femoral Bypass Surgery

When the blood flow in the hip part is disturbed, and blood can no longer fully circulate through the aorta, an operation is performed to install a full-fledged shunt or a prosthesis that replaces the vessel - aorto-femoral bifurcation bypass grafting. Surgeons of the specialized  Vascular Centers successfully perform this type of operation using modern medical equipment and medicines. Intermittent claudication, atherosclerosis of the aorta and arteries of the lower extremities can become indications for the appointment of an operation.

Aorto-femoral bypass surgery:

 An integrated approach, a comprehensive medical examination, including: coagulogram, angiography, vascular ultrasound and other mandatory studies, helps to determine the patient's condition before the operation. After a thorough diagnosis and the establishment of vascular patency disorders, the doctor makes a conclusion. If the medical method of treating the disease is not effective, a decision is made to perform aortofemoral bypass surgery. In this case, the doctor takes into account:

The patient's condition;

Physiology features;

Age;

Contraindications;

Concomitant diseases.

If, for example, there are diseases of the stomach, then it is advisable to first cure the disease so as not to aggravate the situation with surgical intervention. If the threat exceeds the benefits (severe chronic diseases, age of the patient), surgical intervention will be contraindicated.

Preparation for aortofemoral bypass If there are no contraindications to shunting, then the date of the operation and preparatory measures for it are assigned.

On the eve of the operation, the following are performed:

a. Bowel cleansing;

b. The abdomen and thighs are cleared of hair;

c. Sedative drugs are administered by drip.

During aortofemoral bypass surgery, patients are under general anesthesia.

Modern operation technology

Aortofemoral bifurcation bypass can be performed in two ways:

 1.Bilateral - with blockage of the iliac arteries on both sides;

 2.Unilateral - on one side.

  The first option is the most difficult, since it requires sewing the prosthesis to the arteries of both lower extremities. The second is carried out in the groin on one side and on the same side in the side, providing access to the corresponding aorta. In difficult situations with severe damage to the arteries, the clinic can perform a two-story shunting - a multi-stage operation to connect the prosthesis and the artery in the groin, followed by the launch of the shunt from the prosthesis into the lower arteries.

We use the most modern equipment and perform aorto-femoral bifurcation bypass grafting using a small incision in the retroperitoneal zone,

which allows:

Do not injure the intestines;

Do not touch the lumbar nerves;

Recover quickly after surgery.

 After the artery is brought out through an incision in the lateral part of the abdominal tissues, a prosthesis is sewn in from an inert plastic material that is absolutely adaptive for the tissues of the body. After that, the branches of the prosthesis are connected to a healthy area of the femoral arteries, thereby ensuring normal blood circulation.

 Postoperative rehabilitation

Aortobifemoral shunting involves rehabilitation under the supervision of a doctor for a week, after which, in the absence of complications, the patient is discharged home. Subsequently, he must visit a doctor to diagnose positive postoperative dynamics. If everything is successful, then after a month and a half the patient returns to his usual way of life. Shunts for at least five years completely eliminate circulatory insufficiency. If the patient follows the doctor's recommendations and is seen by a specialist once a year, then the disease may never return. Physical education, walking, cycling are also important in prevention.

 Prices for the operation:

  The cost of treatment for aorto-femoral bifurcation bypass surgery will include the price of the operation itself, anesthesia, hospital and doctor's consultation. Vascular Centers also provide services for diagnosing the disease and caring for patients after surgery. More information about prices can be found on the "Price" pages of these centres. Do not save on your health, contact these centers and give a second life to your limbs, freeing the aorta from obstruction and allowing blood to fully circulate in your body.
